Fencing Canberra

Engineered for the Alpine Climate

Canberra Fencing goes beyond standard installation. We engineer our fences to withstand the ACT's -8°C frosts, Wind Region A storms, and reactive clay soils. Fully licensed and compliant with the Common Boundaries Act 1981, we provide the durability your property demands.

Comprehensive Fencing Solutions

We don't just build fences; we build assets. Choose the material engineered for your specific needs.

Colorbond Steel

Best for: Durability & Bushfire Zones.
Engineered to withstand Canberra's thermal cycling without warping. Non-combustible material ideal for BAL-12.5 to BAL-FZ zones.

Why Standard Fences Fail in Canberra

Canberra is not Sydney. The combination of sub-zero frosts and reactive clay soils creates a "post-killer" environment that demands specific engineering.

Frost Heave & Rot

Water expands by ~9% when it freezes. In porous timber posts, this causes micro-cracking and accelerated rot. We recommend Hot Dipped Galvanized Steel Posts even for timber fences.

Wind Region A Loads

Damaging westerly winds often exceed 90km/h. For exposed areas like Gungahlin ridges, we install 600mm deep x 300mm wide concrete footings to prevent leaning.

Reactive Clay Soil

Clay swells when wet and shrinks when dry. We bypass this active zone by setting posts deeper than the standard 450mm used in other states.

Our Technical Standard

  • Post Depth (Standard) 600mm Min
  • Post Depth (Clay/Fill) 800mm+
  • Concrete Strength 20MPa Rapid Set
  • Steel Grade G550 High Tensile
  • Post Spacing (Wind Area) 2.1m Centers

ACT Fencing Regulations: The Authority Guide

The Common Boundaries Act 1981

This Act governs fencing disputes in the ACT. The key concept is the "Basic Urban Fence" (typically a 1.5m timber paling fence).

  • Neighbors generally share the cost 50/50.
  • If you want a premium fence (e.g., Colorbond) and your neighbor wants timber, you may have to pay the gap cost.
  • You must serve a "Notice to Discuss Fence" 30 days prior to work.

Development Approval (DA) Exemptions

Save time and money by understanding what is exempt from DA approval.

  • Side/Rear Fences: Exempt if behind the building line and under 2.3m high.
  • Front Fences: Usually REQUIRE approval. Must comply with "open streetscape" rules (often max 1.2m height or transparent).
  • Corner Blocks: Strict "sight triangle" rules apply for traffic safety.
